Abstract: Coal deposits represent a substantial part of the mineral raw materials of Czechoslovakia. At the present time, about 27.5 million tons of bituminous coal yearly are extracted, so that Czechoslovakia is the eleventh producer of that kind of coal in the world. Apart from the insignificant occurrences of coal matter in the lower Paleozoic and the Cretaceous, the Czechoslovak deposits of bituminous coal are concentrated in the Carboniferous. Brown coal and lignite deposits are of Tertiary, mostly Miocene age. All significant deposits of bituminous coal lie in the Bohemian Massif. The sole deposit in the western Carpathians in Slovakia was abandoned.
