Abstract: The present paper on the micropetrography and coalification of the coal seams of the Chotíkov deposit has shown that the determination of the coal rank by means of the reflectance of vitrinites is one of the axioms of the modern approach to the solution of many geological problems concerning basins, even the limnic ones or those carrying non-coking coal, which are seemingly geologically simple and display germanotype tectonics. The most important results in this respect may be seen in the proof of pre-tectogenic coalification in the Chotíkov deposit area, and the determination of a normal or up to moderately elevated gradient of coalification in coal seam vitrinites equaling 0.06 % R/100 m. This corresponds to common values found e. g. in the limnic basins of France. This furnishes evidence of the on the whole normal average value of the paleogeothermal gradient during the origin of the sediments and coal seams, the course of which was not influenced by the heat of Variscan magmatic rocks. This paper also points out the differences in coalification degrees within the individual segments of coal seams, the basal parts of the seam being – as it appears – mostly coalified to a higher degree than higher lying roof parts, in some cases, e. g. in the Plzeň Coal Seam encountered by bore CO 28, these differences are even surprisingly significant.
